Women in the Legal System: Finding Balance
One of my biggest inspirations growing up was my Aunt Andrea. I watched her balance a demanding career as a lawyer and start a family that quickly expanded to include four devilish boys and one charming girl. Looking back, I cannot believe she was able to take on such a demanding career and raise a family. Andrea always knew she would follow in her father’s footsteps and join his firm as a lawyer. She had strong career ambitions and believed that she did not have to choose between her career and her family. At the time that she was applying for law school, the applicants were even split between male and female but men still had an advantage in the field because they required no maternity leave if starting a family.
Andrea went on to have four beautiful children, the youngest of which is my godson, while simultaneously have a fulfilling career. She practiced family law for fifteen years and become city attorney for Washington Park, Missouri before resigning to help her husband expand his pharmacy business. She credits her success to the help of her family, including yours truly (aka me) to watch the youngsters while she tended to her busy work schedule.
Andrea loved her time as a lawyer but was ready to spend more time with her family and help expand her husband’s business. Although she claims that being a full-time mom is more exhausting, because she never sits down, she still uses law in her daily life. It has given her an analytical thinking base for problem solving and decision-making. Whether she is reviewing a contractual agreement or arbitrating a sibling dispute, she is more than prepared. For all you young women out there who aren’t sure what you want to do, law goes far beyond criminal, it relates to almost every field of business. It would be nice to see more young women filled with the ambition to take on challenging careers that make a difference in the lives of people. Don’t be intimated ladies, you do not have to choose between a career and family- your family and friends can help you achieve both.
“If you know what you want, then just go after it! And pursue it with everything you have.” – Andrea Khoury
